According to Patrick Soper, the great thrill of being
an illustrator is the stunning variety and scope of things that you are called
upon to draw and paint. As an illustrator, one is asked to bring to life the
vision that is in someone else’s mind. Whether it is a children’s
book, an oil field brochure cover, a shipping company’s calendar, or a
festival poster, the artist must listen to the client and first visualize his
vision and then, using the skill of his brush with color and line for tools,
render an artwork designed to catch someone’s attention.
It is not enough to be talented; your creations must be more alluring than
reality. This demand forces the illustrator to come to understand the world around
him as no other artist does. As Patrick says, “There is no substitute for
the experience and discipline gained by drawing and painting all day, every day,
what someone else tells you to draw and paint. The vast knowledge of subjects,
skills with various mediums, and the wealth of experience are simply unattainable
in any other way. It’s no wonder that many of our great artists started
out as illustrators.”
